Buff Enough…..

So every wall painter will know that work gets tagged on. Yeah its annoying but its part of graffiti.

I’d be a hypocrite if i said it mustn’t happen because i was once an agro teenage boy that liked writing on shit i wasn’t supposed to! I was pissed off at stuff and writing on shit was an easy way of feeling important.

For me my heel walls aren’t that far removed from the days of tagging on stuff- i paint quick, i use fat caps, i claim illegal spots, its constant repetition of lines- but a moody little graff head isn’t gonna think that they are just gonna see some big dumb ‘Art Fag’ mural- and so be it.

BuffEnough

On this wall i thought i’d have a bit of fun and rather than leave it to get dogged to oblivion or rather than just paint over the tags as if they never happened i will buff each tag in a neat buff square in a different colour. Building up numerous layers of hideous multi coloured patchwork.

And then after a while of the wall developing write a pretentious artists statement about harnessing the energy of the taggers to produce a constantly evolving interactive public art piece that chronicles the story of a wall. Using the random action of tag placement to produce art…..

This is NOT because i actual think this is art but because i cant think of anything more annoying to the kids that tag on my wall than becoming part of the ‘Art Faggery’ they despise so much!

To Be continued……

Believe it or not…

What a great way to end the year.
Featured amongst the freaks and oddities from around the world, the artist who made POO SHOES:

INSA x EVISU

The kings of Japanese denim EVISU.

Yes old garage raves Evisu, yes Beyonce in ‘Lose My Breath’ Evisu, yes the Beckham kids Evisu.  Well they are celebrating there 20 year anniversary! And as part of there celebrations they asked me to produce a piece of art.

I produced this piece entitled the ‘Button Down, Back Up’:

ButtonDown1-low

ButtonDown3-low ButtonDown4-low

This fully custom made denim playsuit is crafted from authentic Evisu selvedge Japanese denim.

Hand bleach printed with my classic ‘Graffiti Fetish’ pattern.

Double stitched, double layered denim construction, steel buttons and whale boning give this delicate feminine form the strength, toughness and durability of any serious piece of workwear.

ButtonDownCloseUp5-low ButtonDownCloseUp3-low

I worked with the amazing garment specialist Miss Melody MaKer to produce this one off.

Even though this is a piece of art to be admired in its own right, a piece of denim desire that does not need to be worn, it has been tailor made to fit one person and one person only, rapper and role model Miss Nicki Minaj with the slightly unbelievable measurements of 36-24-45.

ButtonDown2-low

This piece was displayed at Evisu’s London ‘Make The Rules’ exhibition/party last week and is now going off on tour around the far east to be displayed at parties in all the major cities!

Even thought it is unseen when displayed i designed this pretty special, custom display stand.

Well its kinda hard to find a mannequins in Nicki Minaj sizes.

Frame3-low Frame4-low

I worked closely with my good friends at JAIL MAKE Studios who hand forged and welded this rigid steel framework, that is then mounted on steel rods that are sunk deep into a thick oak heart shaped base.

The view over HK harbour was pretty pretty good.

DISCLAIMER

Perhaps one of the most important parts of the exhibition to me were these notes i made as an aid to understand the moral contradictions and issues considered producing and displaying this work….

isna19

- Do not buy a bike just as an accessory.

- Do not expect that women have to dress like this in daily life.

- Do take ownership of public space.

- Do not think owning things makes you better than any other person.

- Do colour coordinate your trainers with your bike or daily attire.

- Do paint graffiti.

- Do not think of ‘Girls’ (as in the title of this project) as a term for women in general.

- Do think of ‘Girls’ (as in the title of this project) as a term for a constructed pansexual media fantasy.

- Do understand the difference between fantasy and reality and gauge the expectations of yourself and those around you accordingly.

- Irony does not justify anything but it is a good way of expressing one’s own contradictions.

- Irony does not justify anything but it is a good excuse.
